Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the discourse of locality found in Ahmad Tohari's short story Paman Klungsu dan Kuasa Peluitnya (Uncle Klungsu and the Power of His Whistle). Published by Kompas in 2017, this short story tells the story of Uncle Klungsu, who becomes a volunteer traffic police officer at an intersection. In addition, this short story also tells the story of the relationship between Paman Klungsu and Yu Binah, which is based on gratitude, sincerity, and the values of humanizing humans. Life at the intersection in the busy morning, with many motorists passing by, prompted Paman Klungsu to take the initiative to help the people passing by. This study uses discourse analysis theory. Through this theory, local discourses will be identified based on geographical, social, and cultural aspects at an intersection that is the center of community life. Locality can be revealed through customs, habits, intrinsic elements, social dynamics, dialects, ways of thinking, and perspectives of the characters. Based on the analysis that has been carried out, the locality in this short story includes the identity of a space that is unique to the region in Indonesia; the existence of volunteer traffic police as a culture of mutual assistance; social dynamics and local hierarchy; daily life and informal order; and the personal and emotional values that underlie the community's interactions. This analysis shows that the discourse of locality does not necessarily take the form of visible culture, but can also be expressed through values and feelings.
